Contrast isn't everything

3 Stars

Contrast isn't everything
Contrast and color sell projectors. They're usually king in reviews, and that's mostly what people focus on when comparing different models, and while the Aurora Pro has really nice contrast, and good colors it isn't enough to make the real world watching experience enjoyable. What's missing from most reviews is arguably the most important factor, to me at least, and that's motion handling. Reviewers scrutinize contrast and color using these beautifully shot 4k 60hz videos on YouTube, which the Aurora Pro handles very well, but almost all movies and TV shows are shot in 23.976hz (24p), which is what most of us are actually going to watch on our projectors, and the Aurora Pro just doesn't do a good job of handling that. The Aurora Pro is advertised as having a 24p mode to reduce judder in 24p content, but it does more harm than good. With "24p mode" off 3:2 pulldown is used, and as expected we get judder, choppy motion when scenes are panned. With it on however the judder turns into stutter during panned scenes, and worse creates micro-stutters for small motions like actors moving their faces. I end up leaving it off, as the stutter makes it far worse, but that's not exactly ideal. The Aurora Pro also has MEMC that can be turned on to smooth motion, but this creates a soap opera effect that a lot of people dislike, myself included. MEMC on this projector is also fairly janky. It's like it takes a couple of seconds to trigger from scene to scene, so you go from rough to smooth to rough to smooth throughout a show or movie. When it comes to action or high speed shots the motion also feels like it's being sped up and slowed constantly. It's not a relaxing watch.Another issue with the Aurora Pro is the focus uniformity. It not only constantly goes out of focus, but trying to achieve focus at both the top and bottom of the screen is a challenge. There's always going to be an area where the picture is somewhat blurry. This is more noticeable when gaming and not so much for watching movies or shows, but still an annoyance all the same.Lastly, quality control and customer service. My first unit had a defective fan that made a grinding/ticking noise, and that was promptly replaced by Nexigo, kudos, however this second unit had issues from the start. One where the picture randomly splits, and half the screen turns pink, and one where it starts constantly refreshing the refresh rate and resolution. After some back and forth with customer service and convincing them it wasn't the HDMI cable they agreed to set up an RMA. I asked if the replacement would be new or a refurbished unit, they confirmed it would be refurbished. I don't find that particularly fair that I purchase a new unit, receive defective units and am further punished by being given a refurb as a replacement. I don't think customer service is bad per se, but I'm not happy about how this is being handled. This isn't a bad projector. For a lot of people the motion handling won't be an issue, but I'm coming from a projector that did a good job of handling 24p content, so the judder and stutter from the Aurora Pro is jarring, and makes it hard to just relax and enjoy what I'm watching.

Fan Malfunction within Two Days

Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2023

Super frustrating! Right after the latest firmware update, this projector is practically useless. It turns off every time I try to turn it on. I mean, come on, it’s been just two days since I bought it! Totally unacceptable for a brand-new product. Love the picture quality when it actually stays on, but this constant shutting down is a deal-breaker. One star until they fix this issue.

Update:
I’m updating the rating because the company did send a replacement unit. The new unit is working as expected after updating the settings from the AVS forum. I might have gotten a lemon the first time. In the end, I’m debating if I should send it back because I’m not sure of the longevity of it.

Pros : It’s amazing. Bright as heck. Clarity is amazing. Easy projector set up

Cons: The built in apps and stuff are trash, use your own stick. Set up with screen and instructions to mount it aren’t great. No keystone with gaming mode

I would suggest getting it in the bundle with the ALR screen.

Good picture with a bad build

Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024

I was in the market for a UST for my new home theater that’s painted completely black with 0 ambient light. I did some extensive research online and bought this after watching the hookup comparison on YouTube and compared it myself against the Formovie Theater UST, which is in the same price range.
I made sure the comparison is 1:1 by using it in the same room on the same screen with 0 ambient light. I am attaching screenshots comparing the picture quality of both projectors. In all the pictures, the top one is a picture of Formovie theater and the bottom is from Nexigo Aurora Pro.

About the Nexigo Aurora Pro:
The product got delivered on time, was well packaged. Right out of the box, I didn’t like the build quality and felt like it wasn’t worth the price I paid. But I hooked it up in my theater room and gave it a try.
When I turned it on, the first thing I noticed was the fan noise. It wasn’t loud enough to disturb the sound of a movie when playing but I could hear it from 20 feet. The sound quality is okay for the in built speakers but compared to the inbuilt speakers of Formovie Theater, it wasn’t as good. I used it with a soundbar setup so I didn’t care much about the inbuilt speakers.
Since the first time I turned it on, the software was so weird not a single app opened. When I clicked on an app to open it, it would do nothing. I tried the software update several times and still the same result. That’s the second time I felt it’s not worth the money I paid and felt like it wasn’t gonna last long. I still wanted try the picture quality so I used it with a firestick and an Apple Tv on different occasions for a few weeks.
The picture quality was impressive. It has good brightness levels compared to the Formovie Theater. I felt the black levels were also pretty good. The sound quality through soundbar was not as good as it should be for Dolby Atmos compared to the Formovie.

Pros:
– Good brightness levels
– Good picture quality
– Good black levels

Cons:
– Bad build quality (Feels flimsy and bulky)
– Fan noise
– Garbage inbuilt software
– Not good enough Audio pass through quality
– Not good inbuilt speakers
– Just one year warranty

Conclusion:
After weighing all the pros and cons of the Nexigo Aurora pro, I decided to return it considering the bad build quality, the bulkiness and the flimsiness of the product.
I just didn’t feel confident that this product would last more than a year without something failing. For the price that it costs ($2699 before taxes) I felt it’s just not worth it.
The software of this product is absolute garbage, anyone who uses it definitely needs to invest in an apple TV or better for another $130+.
For the good picture quality that it provides, it maybe a decent product if it comes under 2k and comes with more than 2 years warranty.

Malfunzionamento dopo 10gg: Rosso su tutta la proiezione. Netflix non funziona,

Reviewed in Italy on December 15, 2023

Projecteur incroyable !

Reviewed in France on November 30, 2023
